More Than Basketball: Coach Jay Moore on Flau'jae Johnson, Bounce Nation and Creating Opportunity

Coach Jay Moore has spent years doing the work that most people never see — building players, building programs and building pathways for young women who deserve a bigger stage.

Before Flau'jae Johnson was one of the most recognizable names in women's college basketball, Coach Jay Moore saw what she could become.

That is not a small thing.

In a landscape where exposure often determines opportunity, Moore has made it his mission to make sure the right players get seen by the right people at the right time.

Through Bounce Nation, his grassroots basketball organization, Moore has created a platform that goes beyond wins and losses. It is about development, visibility and giving young women a real shot at the next level.

We sat down with Coach Moore to talk about his relationship with Flau'jae, what drives his work and what he believes the women's basketball community still needs to get right.

"Flau'jae was always special," Moore said. "You could see it early. The talent was there, but more than that, the work ethic was there. She was going to be great regardless. My job was just to make sure the right doors were open when she was ready to walk through them."

Coach Jay Moore has built Bounce Nation into one of the most respected grassroots programs in women's basketball development.

That philosophy — opening doors — is at the center of everything Moore does with Bounce Nation.

He is not interested in taking credit for players' success. He is interested in making sure they have the environment, the competition and the exposure they need to reach their ceiling.

"A lot of these girls are talented enough to play at the next level," he said. "The question is whether anyone is going to see them. That is the gap I am trying to close."

Moore's connection to the broader women's basketball world runs deep. He has built relationships across the grassroots, college and professional levels — relationships that allow him to advocate for his players in rooms they have not yet entered.

When asked what he wants people to understand about the work, his answer was direct.

Moore's connections span the grassroots, college and professional levels of women's basketball.

"This is not about me. It never has been. It is about making sure these young women have every opportunity to succeed. If I do my job right, nobody needs to know my name. They just need to know hers."

That kind of selfless investment is exactly what We Ballin Too was built to spotlight.

Coach Jay Moore is doing the work. And the women's basketball community is better for it.
